We teach all styles of guitar including acoustic, classical, rock, blues, jazz, and pop. Each program combines theory with practical playing to keep your lessons structured yet fun. You will learn essential techniques such as proper hand positioning, picking and strumming, chord transitions, scales, and rhythm. Along the way, you’ll explore ear training, improvisation, and songwriting to develop a well-rounded understanding of music.
Every lesson takes place in a creative and supportive environment where students are encouraged to express themselves freely. Our studio is fully equipped with high-quality instruments and amplifiers, though students are always welcome to bring their own guitars. For those unable to attend in person, online lessons are available, allowing you to learn from anywhere.
Beyond private lessons, The SoundLab community offers opportunities to grow and perform. Students can take part in jam sessions and our annual concert, where they showcase their progress and meet like-minded musicians. These events build performance confidence and create lasting connections within Melbourne’s music scene.

Learning guitar at The SoundLab means gaining skills, confidence, and a deep appreciation for music that lasts a lifetime.
The guitar is an expressive instrument that no two players sound quite alike. The SoundLab helps you find and craft your own unique sound.
Our teaching method focuses on practical progress and creative exploration. Each student follows a simple three-step journey designed to help them learn efficiently while keeping lessons inspiring and enjoyable.
We begin by getting to know you. Your instructor will assess your skill level, musical influences, and goals. This initial session ensures your lessons are tailored to what matters most to you - whether it’s playing for fun, preparing for exams, or performing live.
Once your learning plan is set, your teacher will guide you through structured lessons that build both technical ability and musical understanding. You’ll learn the fundamentals, practise scales and songs, and gradually develop advanced techniques. Students are encouraged to bring in their favourite songs to learn and explore, which keeps lessons engaging and relevant.
When you’re ready, we help you apply your skills in real musical settings. Students can participate in live performances, group sessions, or recordings. Performing with others boosts confidence, enhances timing and listening skills, and reinforces everything you’ve learned.
At The SoundLab, we understand that every guitarist’s journey starts at a different point. That’s why our programs are designed for both complete beginners and advanced players wanting to refine their technique, tone, or performance skills.

If you’ve never picked up a guitar before, our beginner lessons will guide you through every step with patience and encouragement. You’ll learn how to tune your guitar, form chords, strum in time, and read basic music notation or tablature. Each lesson focuses on building confidence while developing solid technique and rhythm. Rather than diving into theory, we teach through playing songs you already know and love, helping you stay motivated and excited about your progress.
As you advance, you’ll move into scales, timing, and basic improvisation, building a strong foundation to grow into more complex playing. Our teachers make sure learning is engaging and fun, so you look forward to each session and notice improvement every week.
For experienced guitarists, The SoundLab offers advanced sessions designed to push your creativity and technical ability to the next level. Lessons may include advanced fretboard navigation, modes, harmonisation, soloing, and genre-specific techniques across rock, jazz, funk, or classical guitar.
You’ll work closely with an instructor who can analyse your playing, identify areas for improvement, and introduce new challenges that strengthen your precision, timing, and musical expression. Advanced players can also focus on live performance skills, tone shaping, songwriting, and stage confidence.
Many of our advanced students go on to form bands, record original music, or perform at local venues – and The SoundLab provides both the technical training and the industry connections to support that journey.
Improve concentration, memory and coordination, switchoff from the chaos around us, or relish in the challenge of learning and crafting a new skill.

Whether you’re learning electric guitar or classical guitar, you need to practise. It is difficult to specify the exact number of hours that should be dedicated to guitar practice each day as everyone learns at their own pace. However, taking regular classes with a qualified instructor can greatly speed up the process and learning curve for the instrument. It is highly recommended to join a class if you are looking to pursue this instrument seriously, as structure and support from experienced professionals can take you further than practising alone. With that being said, taking classes or not, you must make time out of your day for regular practice; even an hour every other day will bring great progress when done consistently over time.
We are conveniently located at 7–9/ 1 Chapel Street, St Kilda, making it easy for students across Melbourne to access our studio.

"I highly recommend The SoundLab Music School, they have fantastic staff and a really great atmosphere! My daughter Casey started Guitar lessons for the first time ever this year at The SoundLab and her progress has been amazing. Her teacher has been awesome, from the range of music she learns to the improvement in her technique. To hear Casey play guitar now you would think she has been having lessons for years. Casey’s favourite day of the week is the day of her lesson. It is the most beautiful sound in our home now, to hear Casey playing and singing away to her favourite artists, from Radiohead, Jesus Mary Chain, Jeff Buckley and many more. Thanks to The SoundLab for all your encouragement and this great experience."
